Today's mani was a recreation/ode to this mani by <a href="http://nailzcraze.blogspot.co.il/2013/03/striping-tape-mani-for-my-awesome.html">A Diary of a Nail Polish Addict</a>. I pinned it a while ago and my husband picked it off my Pinterest board Friday.<br />

<br />
Funny story about these nails. I painted the white base on Friday night and managed to get the diamonds on my ring finger completed in time for my dinner date with the husband. Our 8 year dating anniversary was 4 days after Holden's passing, so we postponed our date to our 6 month wedding anniversary (if there is such a thing. lol). It was kind of fitting that the only nail I managed to finish was my left ring finger.<br />

So Saturday afternoon I finished up my left hand. I stuck with the same color scheme, but varied the size of the diamonds to see what they looked like.<br />

However, on my right hand, I went with a skittle look. I put the striping tape down on all of my nails and then painted them and removed the tape, 1 by 1. On my pinky, I thought it would be cool if I could use my nail foil instead of polish. I painted a layer of the foil glue over the tape, removed the tape, and finished 3 of my other nails. Once I put the foil over the nail, it only kept some of the lines. I'm not sure if the glue ran a little after I removed the tape or what happened. Oh well. I removed it completely and tried to do a gradient with 2 Orly polishes. Unfortunately, they were too thin to really show up and I had lost my patience. Ha, ha.<br />The thumb is the only nail to do a gradient look with 3 colors in the same family.<br /><br />I think the blue and green one may be my favorite. What's yours?Jewlihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06543618316919799138noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472618842300538440.post-54087501695634813132013-02-19T14:33:00.002+01:002013-02-19T14:33:51.420+01:00Naked Nails Update<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I'd like to thank those of you who commented on my Valentine's post about my precious furbaby, Holden, and my post in PAA on Facebook. Your kind words of sympathy and your personal stories about your own furbaby losses really did help me feel as though I wasn't alone.<br /><br />Holden ended up passing away in his sleep on Thursday afternoon (EST) and I found out that night at about 11 pm (my time). We didn't get to Skype one last time so I could take in his adorable face for the last time, but it is a blessing that I no longer had to feel guilty that I wouldn't be there to hold him at the vet's office. All in all, he went in his own way on his own time. I've been handling it 1,000 times better than I ever imagined I would because I'm focusing on all of the wonderful memories and just how incredibly blessed I was to be his human. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Thank you for your kind words from the bottom of my heart. On to the post...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I figured I'd include an updated photo on how my nails are doing being naked all day, (almost) every day...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img height="476" src="http://sphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/557896_588084523212_1561001206_n.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I've been keeping them pretty short because of the flaking of the free edge. I also still have some of that uneven coloration on the free edge (some parts are solid, others are pretty clear). It's less obvious when the free edge is this short. I feel as though the yellow discoloration has grown out quite a bit, which is great.<br /><br />I have also been religiously moisturizing my cuticles at least 2-3 times a day since the hiatus. for most of the last month I've been starting with the Develop 10 Cuticle Oil Conditioner and then going over it with the Lemony Flutter. I bought the D10 oil at Sally's about a year ago. I haven't really felt like it was benefiting me any and trying to apply it using this large bottle was just messy. Yesterday I purchased the p2 One Drop Fitness Oil and the Apricot Nail Care Pen. I appreciate the ease of application with the pen, but the oil seems a bit thin. The Fitness Oil, on the other hand, is a pump and one drop goes a long way. It's thicker, but still absorbs pretty well. I've been using the pen on my left hand and the pump on my right hand to see what difference each makes, but I finish both off with the Lemony Flutter. According to <a href="http://loodieloodieloodie.blogspot.de/2010/11/have-you-moisturized-today.html">LoodieLoodieLoodie</a>, it's wise to following an oil with a wax because the wax sort of traps the oil in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP5SlIXqcHrUF61Xz3eYm8mZ_05Tw1jRjo_lD0urxXTO2tsyYUOqyz1DhA-S9iHSJwyiRKFyWZUW3MGjc3p8v4qVX-eiCEvROamthjHCqeNT-wmXaMJsetR69pp1r2jWE3N8_TpZNTwjhD/s1600/IMG_4240.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjP5SlIXqcHrUF61Xz3eYm8mZ_05Tw1jRjo_lD0urxXTO2tsyYUOqyz1DhA-S9iHSJwyiRKFyWZUW3MGjc3p8v4qVX-eiCEvROamthjHCqeNT-wmXaMJsetR69pp1r2jWE3N8_TpZNTwjhD/s640/IMG_4240.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Many people rave about Lemony Flutter, but I personally don't enjoy the smell or texture and I don't notice that it helps much. I only have 3 more days of naked nails left, but I may keep it going until all of the yellowing is gone. We will see. I'm itching to paint them, so I may not have the will power. Ha, ha. :)</div>

One of the most interesting parts of living in Germany is experiencing Fastnacht. It goes by a couple other names depending on what region you're in, but in Mainz, it's Fastnacht. Because my husband didn't grow up in Germany, it's been difficult for me to get an exact explanation as to what Fastnacht celebrates. It's also confusing because the meaning behind the celebration has changed over time. Mainz is over 2,000 years old, so this isn't surprising. Currently, from my American observations, it's an excuse for people to dress up (like Americans do for Halloween), party for a week (like Mardi Gras) with lots of food and drink, have lots of parades (like Thanksgiving), and it coincides with Ash Wednesday. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Last year we went to the largest Fastnacht parade in Germany and only managed to stay for 2 hours or the parade itself. We arrived early to get a good spot on the parade route. It was too cold and after 2 hours of floats and marching bands, we called it a day. The parade in Mainz lasts for several hours (I think about 5 or 6).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img height="640" src="http://sphotos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/307373_587245669282_1798820923_n.jpg" width="476" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Because of how miserable it was to be out in such extreme cold around all of the drunk high school teenagers, this year we decided it'd be more fun to go to a masquerade ball in a neighboring town. My husband, mother-in-law, and myself were going to dress up as characters from the tv show NCIS, but my husband and I dropped the ball on getting outfits together. On the morning of the ball two weekends ago, my mother-in-law's outfit to be Abby, the Gothic forensic scientist, hadn't arrived, so we decided to scrap the idea of NCIS and used costumes they already had. My husband and I went as hippies and my mother-in-law's outfit ended up arriving later that afternoon. I wore jeans, a necklace, and headband I already had with the tie-dye shirt my mother-in-law loaned me. I also drew a peace sign with eye liner on my cheek while my husband wore a tie-dye shirt, faux leather fringed vest, sunglasses, and an afro.<br /><br />We drank a lot of beer and danced to a lot of American pop songs, as well as traditional Fastnacht songs. All in all, it was a great night.<br /><br />In honor of the event, I broke my hiatus (again, however, chronologically, this was the first time I broke it), to use these awesome tie-dye nail foils I received as part of my birthday club presents. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img height="476" src="http://sphotos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/482454_588084583092_1788549274_n.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Nail foils are really fun and can be super gorgeous. The big drawback is that they don't really last longer than an evening. If you're familiar with foils, then you know that they don't response well to topcoats, especially fast drying ones. I used my regular SV on these because I knew I'd be in a dark hall for the ball and they'd only be on for the night. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Do you have any experience with nail foils? What are your tips for using them?</div>

I didn't do any clean up with these nails. Honestly, I'm too depressed to care. My sister called me this afternoon to tell me that my precious dog is going to be put down tomorrow. Unless the vet has some hail Mary medicine that can cure his many symptoms, I will have to say goodbye from overseas. There are no words for how broken my heart is today and will be for the foreseeable future.<br /><br />His name is Holden and he has been the absolute light of my life for the last 12 years. It will be unbearable to say goodbye and to visit my parents in 6 months without him greeting me.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Many people think it's torture for pets to be dressed up, but Holden always gets excited when he sees his dragon costume. :)</div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Even though I can't paint my actual nails, I thought I'd take the time to do a stamping test with the white polishes I own. Apparently I have 11! Who knew?!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
If you haven't heard of practicing stamping on these flat-backed glass beads, they are really helpful. The ones I have are roughly 1 inch in diameter and I bought a bag of them at the Dollar Tree. I only bought 3 with me to Germany, so the rest are patiently awaiting my return to the US.</div>
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I painted a black rectangle and then used a silver glitter striper to mark off 4 quadrants. Using my most reliable Essence plate (4 full-nail animal print designs and a set of paw prints), my XL stamper and an old customer loyalty card for this comparison. I did a 2 coat base of OPI black (a mini from the 2011 Halloween collection), 1 layer of China Glaze Fast Forward topcoat, the stamping, and then another layer of topcoat.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are the 3 test beads together with flash.</div>

In this photo, starting in the upper left and going around clockwise, I used Essence Stampy polish, OPI mini white from the 2011 Halloween set, China Glaze White on White, and Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Whirlwind White. The black polish streaked through the Essence stamp a bit, but I would still declare it the overall winner, followed pretty closely by the Whirlwind White.</div>

On the second bead, from the upper left going clockwise, I used MNY (Maybelline New York) French Manicure, Sally Hansen Maximum Growth Plus in Pure White Tip, Flormar M103, and Milani High Speed Fast Dry White on the Spot. For this test, I would say the Milani is the front runner followed by the Sally Hansen. The Flormar did the worst. </div>

Overall, I would declare the Essence Stampy Polish the overall winner, with the Sinful Colors, Milani, and SH Insta-Dri tied for second. I'm sure this information isn't ground breaking if you're already deep into the world of stamping, but it was nice for me to spend an evening playing with polish even though I'm still on my hiatus. :)<br /><br />In your experience, what is your best white polish for stamping?Jewlihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06543618316919799138noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472618842300538440.post-36500420860044915792013-01-28T19:50:00.002+01:002013-01-28T19:50:50.211+01:00Half Moon Stamping and a Hiatus<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hello again! I apologize for the absence. Between job hunting, researching doctoral programs, a 2-week stint in the US, studying for the GRE, and continuing studying German at home, I've been feeling pretty swamped.</div>

This is an old mani. The base is Catrice Blues Brothers Vol. II with two coats of China Glaze Dorothy Who? If you're on the fence about whether or not Dorothy Who? is worth buying, trust me, it is if you like blue. Like always, my pictures don't do it justice. </div>

I should have just left well enough alone, but I had this idea to do a half moon stamping mani. As you can see, the execution wasn't so great. I started with a light blue. Maybe if I had lined the half moon shape with the stamping color it would have looked better. I didn't bother trying. Ha, ha.</div>

<br />
I'm embarrassed to be posting this, but these were my nails until three days ago. For roughly the last 6+ months, I've noticed some yellowing of my nails. I'd never had this happen before (other than the occasional staining from a lime green polish) and I originally thought it was from the Nail Tek II I was using. I switched to Nail Envy. The other day I also noticed that I had these weird solid white splotches on the free edge of every nail and I wasn't comfortable going without polish. I consulted my friend Bee over at Bee Polished since she's a nail tech. Her advice was to go naked for at least 4 weeks until this stuff had time to grow out. The clearer parts of the free edge are either too porous or too thin. I almost never buff, so I'm wondering if the Nail Evny usage went on too long.<br />
<br />
So where do I go from here? The plan is to post some old manis until I can polish again and after the 4 weeks I will ditch the Nail Envy and use Essie Feed Me, Seche Clear, or China Glaze Strong Adhesion Basecoat. Feed Me is a nourisher, but these are all just regular bases and not strengtheners. Hopefully, I'll be back to having healthy nails again in a month's time.<br />
<br />
Have you ever had these nail problems?Jewlihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06543618316919799138noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472618842300538440.post-14373415499150882222012-11-23T16:05:00.002+01:002012-11-23T16:05:43.743+01:00Sparkly and Bright!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These deliciously bright and sparkly nails are what prompted the base and striping pattern of my Turkey Day nails. I started with a basecoat, 2 coats of a Finger Paints silver, 2 coats of a Flormar scattered silver holo and SV topcoat. The red accent nail was created using China Glaze Ruby Pumps and striping tape. Unfortunately my pictures do this mani horrible justice, but this will absolutely be recreated for a holiday mani later. I LOVED how sparkly these were! </div>

Do you own any Flormar polishes?Jewlihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06543618316919799138noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472618842300538440.post-11833299889632449272012-11-22T22:14:00.001+01:002012-11-22T22:14:28.103+01:00Happy Thanksgiving!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for many things. One of those is the 81 followers who find my blog worthy of their time. Thank you, thank you! I am also thankful for my healthy family, my darling and fantastic husband, the friends who have never left my side, and our comfortable life. We are truly blessed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Even though I'm living in Germany, I wanted to do some Thanksgiving nails. A couple of years ago, I was inspired by the turkey drawings we used to do as kids where you trace your hand for the turkey body. I liked the idea and got lots of compliments on it, but I think his white face looks really weird now. Ha, ha!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This year, I wanted to make a cute, cartoonish turkey on a single nail. The second photo without flash is actually WAY more color accurate for the orange and yellow polishes. This mani was completed entirely with polish. I used striping tape, dotting tools, and a striper brush to create these.</div>

Since no one will see these nails besides myself and my dear readers, I didn't want to spend much time on my non-dominant hand only to remove it tomorrow. The striped nails and the gold scattered holo base were inspired by my mani from yesterday, which you will see in a later post.<br />

What are you most thankful for, even if you aren't celebrating American Thanksgiving today? :)Jewlihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06543618316919799138noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472618842300538440.post-17585581955218498752012-11-21T17:06:00.000+01:002012-11-21T17:06:45.017+01:00Gosh Holographic Hero Topcoat Test<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As I've mentioned before, I will never claim to be a good swatcher, but I thought this post might be helpful for some other holo users. I am a part of a fantastic birthday group (I will list their blogs at the end of this post, in case you aren't already a follower of these awesome women) and one of these lovelies sent me the new Gosh Holographic Hero in my birthday package. I was so excited that I used it to stamp with first. It looked okay, but with how pretty this polish is in the bottle, I needed MORE! I would have painted my body with it if I could! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, I've heard how badly topcoat dulls the holo of Gosh Holo, but it also chips quickly (as claimed by the lid of the polish bottle itself). I change my polish almost daily, so I figured why not do an experiment. On my left hand, I did 1 base coat, 2 coats of holo, 1 coat of SV, and another coat of holo. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On my right hand, I did 1 base coat, 3 coats of holo. It's been 2 days and my hand with the topcoat is still perfect with the exception of the small nick on my thumb, which you can see below.</div>

And this is the end of my public service announcement. I hope this can help anyone else out who may be trying to decide the best way to wear and/or protect their holo mani and still keep that holoness we all know and love. :)<br />

</div>
Whilst sitting in front of my Helmer yesterday, deciding what to do next, I started pulling out all of my OPI polishes. I really LOVE the formula on every polish I have by them right now (which, as you can see, is 6, plus the 1 I forgot to add in this mani). I broke them into two groups of 3 and painted the bases. The next day I went to town stamping them. If you want to know the name of any of the colors, let me know, but most of them are from the Holland collection.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
For this hand I tried to stick with kinda girly prints. If you look at my middle finger with the roses here, this is actually the 2nd stamp I did on this nail. I used the same color on my thumb and ring finger to stamp my middle finger. Unfortunately, you couldn't even see it! I ended up using the pink polish from my other hand to stamp the roses. It's still a really close match, but it was good enough for me.<br />

<br />
Also, stretching the XL stamper really does work to cover my wide thumb nail. My thumbs and ring fingers both use the same image, but they fit perfectly with the stretching technique. For the occassion, I decided to do a mani using the polish I wore on our wedding day. It's a custom made polish from <a href="http://karinea0a.blogspot.de/2012/10/lets-giveaway-for-my-bday.html#.UKKTE4fAd5V">Karine</a> named "Smurf Penis." A lovely sort of dusty medium blue linear holo. I wanted to do something a bit more exciting, so I added some stamping. The light stamping shade is the light blue from the Color Club metallic collection. The darker blue is Blues Bros. Volume II and the black is from Sinful Colors.<br />

Are you tired of seeing stamping from me yet? Ha, ha. :)Jewlihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06543618316919799138noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2472618842300538440.post-52182435898881482372012-11-14T20:09:00.000+01:002012-11-14T20:09:01.128+01:00Fun with China Glaze<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You'll see a post in a couple days where I used all of the OPIs I own to do a mani. I wanted to do the same general thing for today, but with my China Glazes. It didn't quite turn out as I had hoped.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To start, here's what I was working with:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaWVyLjPAFDl97G_hWoVUYoVnHrZwz8T7vKPQ-J06RlxIAsAUDExamfnjXsLnX7Xecw6kc6QL9ZcVmJLcWEsp_QmatWqmc1Ff35zw9qPDd7zvnJIhNVfC9AunzxEPrFzadGON9QzgVBX_4/s1600/IMG_4112.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaWVyLjPAFDl97G_hWoVUYoVnHrZwz8T7vKPQ-J06RlxIAsAUDExamfnjXsLnX7Xecw6kc6QL9ZcVmJLcWEsp_QmatWqmc1Ff35zw9qPDd7zvnJIhNVfC9AunzxEPrFzadGON9QzgVBX_4/s640/IMG_4112.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I started playing around with polishes, but only one of the polishes in this photo are actually China Glaze. On my thumb here, you'll see the green glitter Snowman polish and an unnamed purple Color Club glitter. These are my absolutely most favorite type of glitter polishes. I don't much care for the glitter toppers, but I have quite a few (as you see on 3 of my other fingers). If you know the name of any other glitter polish like these two, PRETTY PLEASE let me know. They have clear bases, which is what I love about them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmEWeCRCeODbmunLlG_2EzEDMi64za7S08gPYsHUH6wRpfSO0mGrJYfBd9MLyN6tZt2E-uMiOhmhMsO2s2gAUKomXIlvT37GSkrTcWXY2sHagNWdWu1m3igTtUmVZDq7BnavFGp6zfWMxK/s1600/IMG_4116.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="356" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmEWeCRCeODbmunLlG_2EzEDMi64za7S08gPYsHUH6wRpfSO0mGrJYfBd9MLyN6tZt2E-uMiOhmhMsO2s2gAUKomXIlvT37GSkrTcWXY2sHagNWdWu1m3igTtUmVZDq7BnavFGp6zfWMxK/s640/IMG_4116.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-05x7xaDHkQGxo2hP64ArRbHCgXqAN_GGYK2TUO08ta9LcOA24YXbizn8X58RtIxtGsvs4RtNuSkfJ8mgBJyrdyxWleuT7uUHzZNlbR4m3Q6QC-uB4nyb6UmPnTNSRpVB3bzekJ7rSVay/s1600/IMG_4121.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="359" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-05x7xaDHkQGxo2hP64ArRbHCgXqAN_GGYK2TUO08ta9LcOA24YXbizn8X58RtIxtGsvs4RtNuSkfJ8mgBJyrdyxWleuT7uUHzZNlbR4m3Q6QC-uB4nyb6UmPnTNSRpVB3bzekJ7rSVay/s640/IMG_4121.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
On my ring finger here, I was trying out my newly acquired Gosh Holo (original) over my matte topcoats to see how it would behave. My middle finger is a layering fail. For sure.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTWUiBfFiFvybrUbVh-ZoACcAuoysy7zEcuFRlpX8TMID_wcAWe8dQIHPz0K-ZV7r_8TImz6ZjPQ7W1Myx7cP1chgR6JmsQxtuO0x2b_VYwMeaLncK9vO76sJTuuKWCwZnf-fD5c-YsVzy/s1600/IMG_4119.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="359" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTWUiBfFiFvybrUbVh-ZoACcAuoysy7zEcuFRlpX8TMID_wcAWe8dQIHPz0K-ZV7r_8TImz6ZjPQ7W1Myx7cP1chgR6JmsQxtuO0x2b_VYwMeaLncK9vO76sJTuuKWCwZnf-fD5c-YsVzy/s640/IMG_4119.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now for the real reason for this post. If you haven't heard, today is World Diabetes Day. One of my grandmothers has been living with diabetes for as long as I have been around. When she comes to visit, her favorite splurge is the chocolate cake from Frisch's Big Boy. I am such a chocoholic with a sweet tooth that I can't imagine having to pay such close attention to the sweets I eat. I did this blue mani in support of her.<br />
<br />
These before shots are 1 coat of Catrice Blues Brother Vol. II with 2 coats of China Glaze Blue Sparrow. Normally Blue Sparrow is a bright neon blue, but because of my layering choice, they are quite dark. I truly fell in love when I was done.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEg5ORk9M73SmSX2G-Sdq88Z7t-LUyo_GE7OiGsVJint8tKu_qNF97472FNLOAFNO7tUpimrM8FeBQueU_e7vEXedFXLEV7J5uCULLZDEWZt4Li9T-abDfMVs3w_rXALB7bNFhmo83iJn2/s1600/IMG_4125.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="359" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEg5ORk9M73SmSX2G-Sdq88Z7t-LUyo_GE7OiGsVJint8tKu_qNF97472FNLOAFNO7tUpimrM8FeBQueU_e7vEXedFXLEV7J5uCULLZDEWZt4Li9T-abDfMVs3w_rXALB7bNFhmo83iJn2/s640/IMG_4125.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYalHvC4OB93q0wxbTJpwKEi-zmxBDaDVFwZNTdd8HxjPuijE2bXcQKh6Mpd-mZb6gb_nzLqsV7f_iRImRRiNhChMOw_F40CS3RtaNLNrzg-7jQjh5ET5d1JhQTEknk2jSUuiBZBi_H82Y/s1600/IMG_4126.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYalHvC4OB93q0wxbTJpwKEi-zmxBDaDVFwZNTdd8HxjPuijE2bXcQKh6Mpd-mZb6gb_nzLqsV7f_iRImRRiNhChMOw_F40CS3RtaNLNrzg-7jQjh5ET5d1JhQTEknk2jSUuiBZBi_H82Y/s640/IMG_4126.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I ruined them. I thought it'd be cool to stamp over my half moon stickers. It was better in my head than it turned out in reality.<br />
<br />
I started off doing China Glaze For Audrey with a fauxnad plate, but I didn't like the blues together.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizdHluZ-ll1ZOj_L1RcyOi0RBbY-fKEUjGGr3Wkwb4NetsYb_dwJTcazI_vITyXBpmHKBf1vh2MvOjxd4WbVZMmM6VaJ0f7Bripmn3XrFvKX3JIwS5d6Js7TvXEQTfAdI9YGwGbVzza8rV/s1600/IMG_4127.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizdHluZ-ll1ZOj_L1RcyOi0RBbY-fKEUjGGr3Wkwb4NetsYb_dwJTcazI_vITyXBpmHKBf1vh2MvOjxd4WbVZMmM6VaJ0f7Bripmn3XrFvKX3JIwS5d6Js7TvXEQTfAdI9YGwGbVzza8rV/s640/IMG_4127.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Then I moved to China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy and Wicked Style. Several nail artists have been doing technique of stamping after using multiple colors on the plate at one time. I didn't like this even more than the blue nails. Oh well. At least I had the insight to take before pictures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBI7UwALZqh_WdWfQ6WKAium7R0nruT0jJVcoEX32DZ5NesI3ZDe5wSGBT5FXFV7SLveVximvKWnWaN8DBi5B1TrHR34iyFS0HhcLvkc-KQW-t9h7ep0X0Gf8QudiFaPLqUXZxTS1n2Sus/s1600/IMG_4128.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="358" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBI7UwALZqh_WdWfQ6WKAium7R0nruT0jJVcoEX32DZ5NesI3ZDe5wSGBT5FXFV7SLveVximvKWnWaN8DBi5B1TrHR34iyFS0HhcLvkc-KQW-t9h7ep0X0Gf8QudiFaPLqUXZxTS1n2Sus/s640/IMG_4128.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Do you enjoy seeing the "play around" pictures that I posted at the beginning of this post, or do you wish I'd just shut up and get to the good stuff already? I really want to know. :)<br />

After using China Glaze Gaga for Green as the base of my<a href="http://fanningthefumes.blogspot.de/2012/11/leopard-brights.html"> green leopard</a> finger, I wanted to use it for a full mani. Of course I decided to stamp over it since I'm on a bit of a stamping kick. I used a really old lime green and a bright metallic Flomar green for the stamping colors. I'm really enjoying my XL stamper now that I've sort of got the hang of it. I am able to use so many other polishes that never worked with my Essence stamper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I hope you'll forgive me for the lightning and focus in these photos. It's been gray and rainy nonstop for the last 1.5 weeks. Not to mention that our apartment has really pathetic lighting. It's been impossible to find proper lighting for nail photos. Enough talking, time for the green!</div>

I painted my toes the other day with China Glaze Flip Flop Fantasy and fell in love. I received it in a swap months ago, but never got around to using it. After seeing it on my toes, I knew I had to put it on my fingers. I painted my nails and went to bed without doing any art. The next day my highly anticipated Gosh Holographic arrived in the mail and I was super excited to use it to do some nail art. Unfortunately Gosh Holo is a bia and doesn't play nicely without an aqua fix base, which I don't yet have. I'll show you a picture of the failure at the end of this post.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So my second attempt I decided to try out freehand leopard print. Everyone says how easy it is, so I gave it a whirl. I really liked how the all pink versions of leopard print turned out, so I decided to mix it up with the rest of the nails.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I spent some time poking through my stash and realized that I had some polishes that may be dupes of each other. I took a day to do some swatching and weeded out the polishes that I didn't need anymore. As you read in my last post, I am itching for some new stamping plates. I'm hoping that if I can make some space by selling these polishes, I'd be able to grab some new plates. :)<br />
<br />
Shipping will be from Germany unless you are willing to wait until I go to the US for Christmas. I cannot ship anything for less than $4.50 from Germany (they do shipping by weight categories, up to 500 grams is $4.50). I can fit probably 8-10 polishes in a package for that price.<br />
<br />

I've taken a billion photos of this mani, trying to capture the actual color of these spots. Unfortunately, my sad Canon PowerShot A590IS just couldn't rise to the occasion. If you are tired of seeing only animal print stamping on my blog, I am sorry. Out of the 15 or so plates that I have, only 1 works consistently well. I'm hoping to acquire some new plates for Christmas, but maybe I'll break down and convince the hubby I need some before then. he, he. :) </div>

I wanted to use my go-to purple creme (OPI Planks A Lot), so I just picked a complementary purple creme by Orly. If you want to recreate this mani for yourself, check out Globe and Nail's tutorial with the link above. Basically, you create a gradient for your base, tape off lines, and create the same gradient, but with the colors reversed. </div>

Have you seen this look before? I really like it. :) I think next time I will try different colors instead of the same color in different shades or maybe even a 3 color gradient, though the middle color may get lost.</div>

I worked two seasons in a Halloween store and one of those seasons we were only allowed to play cds that we were also selling. We only sold 2 types: spooky noises and classic songs. Among the classic songs were Thriller, Somebody's Watching Me, Monster Mash and, of course, The Time Warp. (<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rtkdo7bOmJc" style="text-align: center;">here is hopefully a video that works if you aren't familiar with The Time Warp from Rocky Horror Picture Show)</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I was torn between Monster Mash, Somebody's Watching Me and The Time Warp, so after googling some images for inspiration, I found the image below:</div>

I thought it'd be cool to do one of the steps on each of my nails (but I left out # 6 since I only had 5 nails). If you've seen my <a href="http://fanningthefumes.blogspot.de/2012/06/tennis-nail-art.html">tennis nail art</a> then you've seen me do a similar stick figure. I still have my spider webs on my left hand because I love them so much, so that meant I needed to do the nail art with my non-dominant hand and it needed to be simple enough.</div>

The color I was inspired by was Riveting by China Glaze. I just love this polish and how it glows in person. So many people have done the spider webs, but I tried one out on one nail and loved it, so I went with it. To mix it up a bit, I put a big fat black spider on my thumb. My husband called while the topcoat was drying on my thumb and I smudged the poor spider's head. I didn't have time to fix it, so please forgive me if you can see his imperfections. He's still pretty cute, if I do say so myself. :)</div>

For Day 22 I went with "based on a book." Growing up my sister and I always read the book "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark." I believe there were 3 books in a boxed set, but I absolutely remember these pictures.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.squidoo.com/scary-stories-to-tell-in-the-dark">http://www.squidoo.com/scary-stories-to-tell-in-the-dark</a></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The story I remember best is called "The Girl with the Green Ribbon." I remembered it as a blue ribbon, but it's definitely the same story. The girl falls in love with a boy and she is always wearing a ribbon around her neck throughout their lives together. Her husband asks why she wears it and she tells him she can't say just yet. Then on her death bed... well you can read for yourself below:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</tbody></table>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I freehanded the girl with acrylic paints and as you can see, she has a blue ribbon. Oops. :) The base is China Glaze For Audrey. I have never really been able to draw people (other than stick figures), so I was pleased with how the girl turned out. Not as amazing as some other people can manage, but good for me. ha, ha. </div>

I am to the point in the challenge that I'm in a rut. It's to the themes that I've never worked with (ex. inspired by a song, pattern, movie, etc.). Who hasn't used a color for inspiration? All the color challenges were easy? I googled Halloween pattern and found this adorable pattern. I originally had the idea to recreate parts of the pattern on each nail so there was a bit of everything all over. Silly me, I had a mishap. If you haven't noticed, I've been doing one design on one hand and one on the other, that way I can burn through more ideas in less time. I did the last one <a href="http://fanningthefumes.blogspot.de/2012/10/jewlis-31-day-halloween-nail-art_24.html">(the violet ghost)</a> at the same time as these. I painted the bases one night and did the details the next morning. After I finished the ghost, I realized I did the simple design with my dominant hand and left my poor non-dominant hand to do all the detail in this pattern. I am NOT ambidextrous at all, so I decided to make it a bit easier by doing one image on each nail.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I picked the devil, Frankenstein's monster, black cat, bat, and a voodoo doll. Maybe I'll incorporate the other guys later on (using my DOMINANT hand, haha!). </div>

These are another example of something that sounded super cool in my mind and didn't translate well with the execution. I received these two polishes (CG Ghoulish Glow and Bizarre Blurple) in one of my birthday packages from a lovely woman in my birthday group <a href="http://nailpolishismycrack.blogspot.de/">Momma Elizabeth</a> yesterday. I saw swatches of Bizarre Blurple and thought it was nice, but nothing special. After putting it on, I was in love. :) And as I've said before, I will never be one to put up swatches to help people decide if you should buy a polish. I'm about the art. :)</div>

My idea was to paint the violet base and use the Ghoulish Glow to paint an invisible ghost. Then I was going to work on my glow in the dark pictures. The first problem was that I put the GG on too thick (hoping it'd make it show up better) and it wasn't invisible by any stretch of the imagination. The second problem was that I can't make it show up in my dark pictures.<br />

Flags. Are there really many options for flags that are related to Halloween? Not really. I actually worked two years in a Halloween USA store and I had flash backs to all the pirate gear we used to sell. I also had these nail stencils of skull and cross bones that I've been saving for months to try. They worked really well.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Day 18 in the normal challenge is Half Moons, which conjured up a vision of a grassy hill with a tombstone. This is 100% better than my <a href="http://fanningthefumes.blogspot.de/2012/10/jewlis-31-day-halloween-nail-art_15.html">yellow nails day</a> when I made my first attempt at half moons using those circle stickers.Other than the green hill and the blue night sky (both polishes from Catrice), the other colors are hand mixed acrylic paints.</div>
